Marilyn Baldwin of ThinkJessica, a campaign group helping scam victims and their relatives, is calling on Gordon Brown to do more to protect vulnerable people against postal scams. How to get rid of junk mail
You can stop the bulk of junk mail by registering with the main junk mail opt-out schemes and getting a letterbox sticker:

Opt-out schemes
There are quite a few opt-out schemes that can help reduce junk mail. To make registering with the most effective opt-out schemes truly easy we have created Junk Buster. This smart application allows you to contact up to six schemes in one go. In less than a minute's time you can reduce junk mail by some 60 per cent; that are 250 pieces / 11 kilos of junk mail a year. And yes, it's free!
- Letterbox stickers
There is no opt-out scheme for take-away menus, taxi cards, supermarket leaflets and other unaddressed junk mail. You can get rid of some 100 pieces of unaddressed junk mail per year by getting a No Junk Mail sign. The stickers we sell also give you the option to say 'yes' or 'no' to free newspapers.

Re-use those envelopes!
Every year some 4.5 billion pieces of 'direct mail' are posted through letter boxes in the UK. Most of the envelopes this junk mail comes in end up on landfill as it is almost impossible to recycle them.
