Tom Burtonwood and Holly Holmes create art that combines pop culture and anti-war messages. The work of the Chicago-based artists views warfare in purely economic terms. In a recent interview, Burtonwood explained that "brands such as AK-47 are on a par with Coca Cola and Nike" and that war is "just another function of the market." This, the artists argue, creates a demand for war, to keep up with supply.
Another element in Burtonwood and Holmes' art is 'recycling visual culture'. Junk mail, then, is an ideal material to work with.
Many thanks to the artists for giving us permission to show some of their art on this page. Do visit their website and Flickr pages for much more art.
